Accessory Pancreatic Duct
The Accessory Pancreatic Duct (APD) is a small tube connecting the main pancreatic duct to the common bile duct. It serves as an important channel for passage of digestive fluids produced by the pancreas, to the intestine. Its presence is important for the proper functioning of the pancreas and it's related organ systems. The APD is also a diagnostic tool in medical imaging and in detecting diseases of the pancreas, particularly in diseases such as pancreatitis, where the flow of bile or pancreatic juice is increased. In such cases, the APD is used to measure changes in the flow and help in diagnosing the disease. It is also useful in other digestive diseases, particularly in surgeries related to the pancreas.
