Opioids
Opioids are powerful pain-relieving drugs that work by blocking signals of pain to the brain. They have been used for centuries for the relief of severe physical pain and are now widely used in the US and other countries. Opioids are important for managing short-term, severe pain, such as that associated with surgery or other medical procedures. They can also be used to manage long-term pain, such as from cancer, physical injury, and chronic illnesses. When used appropriately, opioids can provide relief from pain and improve quality of life. However, opioids can be addictive and must be used cautiously due to the risk for dependence and other complications.
