Fontan Operation

The Fontan operation is a surgically created connection of the veins of the heart to the pulmonary artery in patients with a single ventricle of the heart. This procedure helps balance the blood circulation and reduce the heart's workload, allowing oxygen-depleted blood to be sent to the lungs to be re-oxygenated, while oxygen-rich blood is delivered to the body. The Fontan operation is significant in providing long-term support to children born with a single ventricle of the heart, and can improve quality of life and life expectancy. It is a highly specialized procedure, requiring a team of skilled surgeons and cardiac specialists whose skills are essential in ensuring the best possible outcome.
