Breakthrough Pain

Breakthrough pain is sudden and unpredictable pain that comes on quickly, often interrupting the continuous background pain that people with chronic pain experience. It usually has a short onset, is of moderate to high intensity, and can last from seconds to minutes or even hours. Breakthrough pain can be caused by physical activity or movement, or even by simply changing a position. It is a common occurrence for individuals with chronic conditions such as cancer, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and nerve pain, and managing it is important for maintaining quality of life. Breakthrough pain has a significant negative effect on individuals’ daily activities and should be treated with medications. Non-opioid, opioid, and adjuvant medications are among the treatment options available. Breakthrough pain is an important factor to consider in the management of individuals with chronic pain.
