Velopalatine Insufficiency
Velopalatine Insufficiency (VPI) is a rare congenital disorder that affects the palate and soft palate (velum). Individuals with VPI have difficulty controlling the movements of their soft palate, resulting in a restricted or absent nasal airway and nasal regurgitation during speaking or eating. VPI has been linked to numerous other health concerns including obstructed or interrupted speech, sleep apnea, malocclusion, difficulties in feeding, and ear infections. Treatment of VPI depends on the severity of symptoms and can range from speech therapy and palatal implants to surgical reconstruction of the soft palate. By addressing VPI, individuals can reduce their risk of medical complications, improve their quality of life, and achieve better overall health.
