Tonsils

Tonsils are small, oval-shaped lumps of tissue located at the back of the throat on either side. They are part of the lymphatic system and play an important role in helping the body fight infection by producing antibodies and serving as a barrier against bacteria and viruses. Tonsils can become inflamed and infected, often leading to sore throat, difficulty swallowing and fever. Treatment of tonsillitis usually involves a course of antibiotics and, in severe cases, surgery to remove the tonsils may be necessary. In addition, tonsils can also aid in detecting early signs of certain illnesses and diseases.
