Peritonsillar Abscesses

Peritonsillar abscesses, also known as quinsy, are a serious complication of tonsillitis. They are most often caused by an untreated bacterial infection from Group A Streptococcus bacteria that has spread from the tonsils to the surrounding tissue. Peritonsillar abscesses cause severe pain and difficulty swallowing due to swelling in the throat. They are diagnosed through examination and imaging techniques. Treatment usually involves draining the abscess through a procedure known as an incision and drainage. Antibiotics may also be prescribed to prevent future infection. Peritonsillar abscesses can be prevented by controlling chronic tonsillitis with proper treatment and antibiotic therapy.
