Parathyroidectomy

Parathyroidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove one or more of the four parathyroid glands. Removal of these glands is typically done to treat hyperparathyroidism, a disorder characterized by too much parathyroid hormone (PTH) in the blood. By removing the overactive parathyroid gland or glands, the amount of PTH in the blood is reduced and the symptoms associated with hyperparathyroidism, such as fatigue, weakness and kidney stones, can be relieved. In addition, complications such as osteoporosis and osteomalacia can be prevented. Parathyroidectomy is a safe and effective treatment for hyperparathyroidism, providing relief and improving quality of life.
