Parathyroid
Hormone Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) is a hormone produced by the parathyroid glands. It is an essential hormone that helps regulate the amounts of calcium and phosphate in the blood, playing a role in maintaining the proper balance of these substances throughout the body. Low levels of PTH can lead to hypocalcemia (low calcium levels) while high levels can lead to hypercalcemia (high calcium levels). PTH also plays a role in bone metabolism and calcium absorption from the digestive tract. PTH deficiency can result in osteoporosis and other bone disorders, while excess PTH can cause kidney stones and other problems. PTH has many uses in clinical medicine, such as the treatment of hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D deficiency, and metabolic bone diseases. It is also used to treat calciphylaxis (a life-threatening skin disorder).
