Otology

Otology is a branch of medicine that specializes in diagnosing and managing diseases and disorders of the ear, including hearing loss, ear infections, balance disorders, tinnitus, and facial nerve paralysis. To diagnose these conditions, otologists (ear specialists) use a variety of techniques, including endoscopy, electronystagmography, audiometry, and imaging studies. Treatment may involve medications, hearing aids, and/or surgery. Otolaryngologists (ENT doctors) specialize in otology, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nose, throat, and other parts of the head and neck. Improved diagnosis and treatment of these conditions can lead to improved general health, quality of life, and hearing.
