Oropharynx

The oropharynx is a part of the throat between the mouth and the esophagus and is a part of the pharynx (the larger area of the throat). It is important in the process of swallowing and provides an air passageway between the nose and the lungs. The oropharynx is also a common site of infection, and can be affected by diseases such as cancer. It is often the target of endoscopic examinations in order to diagnose and monitor certain conditions. In addition, it is an important site for the examination of various oral tissues, as well as for the delivery of medications and other treatments.
