Maxilla
The maxilla is the largest and most superior of the two paired bones that make up the human upper jaw. It plays an essential role in facial form, chewing, talking, and breathing. Its structure also houses and supports the upper teeth, which are necessary for biting and chewing food. In addition, the maxilla provides an attachment site for the muscles used in facial expressions such as smiling and frowning. From a medical perspective, the maxilla is a common site of trauma and infection and is important for the diagnosis and treatment of many facial conditions.
