MALT Lymphoma
MALT (Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue) Lymphoma is a type of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL) which mainly affects the stomach and other parts of the digestive tract. MALT Lymphomas are a subset of NHLs and can be caused when the normal immune response to a bacterial or viral infection, or a chronic inflammatory condition, goes awry. These lymphomas have a favorable prognosis and most can be treated successfully with chemotherapy, radiation or a combination of the two. They can also be treated with monoclonal antibodies and drugs that target certain molecules on the cancer cells. In certain cases, surgical removal of the affected area may be required. Patients with MALT Lymphoma can have a positive outcome with proper treatment and follow-up care.
