Hay Fever

Hay fever is a type of allergic rhinitis, an inflammation of the nose caused by an allergen. Symptoms of hay fever include sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes and throat, and congestion. This condition is very common, and affects more than 20% of the population in some areas. Hay fever is caused by an allergy to substances such as pollens and molds that are present in the air we breathe. Treatment generally involves the use of antihistamines and avoidance of exposure to the allergen. In the case of severe hay fever, immunotherapy may be recommended. The recognition and treatment of hay fever is important for reducing symptoms and improving quality of life. The avoidance of triggers, use of antihistamines, and immunotherapy are all effective ways of treating hay fever.
