Knee Osteoarthritis Progression
Knee osteoarthritis is a debilitating degenerative joint disease that affects the knee joint. It is a slow process of destruction and wear of the cartilage in the knee. As the condition progresses, it may cause pain and swelling in the knee and reduced mobility. The main cause of knee osteoarthritis is aging, but other factors that can contribute to the disease include obesity, genetics and previous joint trauma. Early diagnosis and treatment are important, as intervention at an early stage can prevent further damage. Treatment options include exercise, weight control, medications, braces and surgery. Early intervention is important to prevent knee osteoarthritis progression, which can lead to severe disability and ultimately to joint replacement.
