Hand Osteoarthritis
Hand osteoarthritis is a chronic progressive disorder that causes pain, stiffness, and swelling of the affected joints. Symptoms of hand osteoarthritis often start gradually and may worsen over time. This condition is the most frequent form of arthritis and affects more women than men. It can affect any of the small joints of the hands, including those of the fingers, thumbs, and wrists. Hand osteoarthritis can cause disability and a reduction in the quality of life, but treatments are available to reduce symptoms and maintain the ability to perform daily activities. Self-management strategies, including physical activity, weight management, joint protection, and lifestyle modifications, are effective in helping to manage hand osteoarthritis.
