Overview

Ophthalmology macular disorders refers to the study and clinical management, within ophthalmology, of diseases affecting the macula, the small central region of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed central vision and colour perception. Because the macula provides the acuity needed for reading, recognising faces and other fine visual tasks, disorders affecting it can cause significant loss of central vision while peripheral vision is often preserved. Macular disorders include age-related macular degeneration, in which the macula deteriorates with age; macular oedema, the build-up of fluid that swells and distorts the macula and can arise from diabetes, vascular disease or as a side effect of certain medications; macular holes and puckers; and inherited and inflammatory conditions. Diagnosis relies on detailed retinal examination and imaging, and treatment depends on the specific disorder, ranging from injections of medications into the eye and laser therapy to surgery. Research relevant to this topic in Ophthalmic Science and related OpenAccessPub titles includes a case of leflunomide-induced cystoid macular oedema, illustrating how systemic drugs can produce macular complications, alongside broader work on retinal and ocular disease. As a journal covering eye health, Ophthalmic Science spans the diagnosis and treatment of retinal and macular conditions. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to ophthalmology and macular disorders.
