Keratoplasty

Keratoplasty is a surgical procedure used to correct various corneal issues. Also known as corneal transplant, it involves the replacement of the diseased or damaged cornea with a healthy one from a donor. This procedure is useful in cases where the cornea has been damaged by injury, disease or infection. This surgical procedure is performed by an ophthalmologist and requires the use of a general or local anesthesia. Typically, the corneal transplant is an outpatient procedure, but patients are required to stay in the hospital for a few days for observation. Keratoplasty is a complex procedure that requires careful screening and evaluation of the donor cornea. The evaluation process ensures that the donor cornea is healthy, disease-free and of the best quality. The donated cornea is also matched with the recipient's corneal size and shape to minimize the risk of post-operative complications. There are different types of keratoplasty procedures, including penetrating keratoplasty, anterior lamellar keratoplasty, and deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty, among others. The type of keratoplasty used depends on the nature and extent of corneal damage or disease. Overall, keratoplasty is a useful surgical procedure for treating corneal diseases and injuries. It has a high success rate, but patients must follow the post-operative care instructions to ensure optimal recovery.
