Protists
Protists are a diverse group of unicellular and often microscopic eukaryotic organisms that are not classified as plants, animals, or fungi. They inhabit a wide range of habitats, including freshwater, marine and soil environments. They are important primary producers in aquatic environments, due to their ability to photosynthesize and provide food for other organisms in the food chain. Protists are also used as model organisms in research, due to their simpler cell structure and easier manipulation compared to other multicellular eukaryotic organisms. Protists, both free-living and parasitic, also play a significant role in human and animal health, as parasites and pathogens of humans, as well as beneficial symbionts in the digestive systems of animals.
