Protein Degradation
Protein degradation is a biological process that plays a central role in cellular homeostasis in all living organisms. It involves the breakdown of proteins into their component amino acids and is important for the regulation of cell functions, including metabolism, development, the immune system, and gene expression. Protein degradation is necessary for the recycling of amino acids, which can be reused for the synthesis of new proteins, and is also an important part of apoptosis, or programed cell death. By regulating and controlling the levels of proteins in cells, protein degradation helps to maintain healthy metabolic homeostasis.
