Pili and Fimbriae
Pili and Fimbriae are hair-like structures that extend from the outer surface of certain bacterial cells. These proteins enable the bacterium to adhere to its environment, to other cells, and even to interact with host cells. The pili of a cell are also used to transfer genetic material between cells during bacterial conjugation. Similarly, the fimbriae are used to initiate contact between bacteria and other cells, such as eukaryotic cells, to facilitate the exchange of genetic material. Pili and fimbriae are important components of bacterial motility and disease progression, and can be important in therapeutic interventions such as vaccines and antibiotics.
