Mechanisms of Signal Transduction
Signal transduction is the process by which a signal is transmitted through a series of biochemical and physiological pathways to elicit a response in a cell. This may involve the direct interaction of molecules, or the use of cellular receptors and second messengers to propagate the signal. The signaling pathways are extremely important for the functioning of a cell and are essential for the maintenance of cellular homeostasis. Signal transduction is involved in a wide variety of physiological processes such as inflammation, apoptosis, cell proliferation and differentiation, and metabolism. It is also an important factor in diseases such as cancer and diabetes, and can be targeted for therapeutic interventions.
