Gene Expression
Gene expression is the process by which information from a gene is used in the synthesis of a functional gene product, typically a protein. It is the key process by which DNA influences the development, growth, and behavior of an organism. The expression of genes is regulated by multiple mechanisms, including but not limited to changes in DNA methylation, chromatin structure, and transcription factor binding. These changes can modulate the expression of thousands of genes simultaneously, thereby affecting many aspects of the cell such as metabolism, development, and response to external stimuli. The understanding of gene expression is essential for comprehending the regulation of gene function, which is vital for the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for many diseases.
