Forkhead Box

P3 Forkhead Box P3 (FOXP3) is a transcription factor important for controlling the normal development and functioning of the immune system. It is essential for regulating the balance between effector T cells, which are involved in recognition and elimination of foreign antigens, and regulatory T cells, which regulate effector T cells. Mutations in FOXP3 have been associated with autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, autoimmune thyroid disease and rheumatoid arthritis. FOXP3 expression is also a marker for the diagnosis of T-cell lymphomas, such as peripheral T-cell lymphoma and adult T-cell leukemia. Furthermore, its role in the maintenance of immune homeostasis and tolerance makes FOXP3 an important target for therapeutic interventions in autoimmune diseases.
