Denaturation

Denaturation is a process in which a protein or nucleic acid molecule loses its three-dimensional structure, usually when exposed to high temperatures, pH changes, or by the addition of chemicals, like alcohol or detergents. The denaturation of proteins or DNA can have a significant impact on their function and is a critical aspect when applying proteins and nucleic acids for research or practical uses. For example, denaturation is an essential step in the process of DNA extraction, a method used to extract DNA from a biological sample. Denaturation is also used in PCR, a molecular biology technique used to amplify small segments of DNA, which is essential in clinical diagnostics. Denaturation is also used in recombinant protein production, where the denaturation of original proteins serves as a catalyst for the production of modified proteins.
