Chromophores
Chromophores are molecules that absorb and emit light in the visible spectrum of light. They are integral components in the structure and function of many proteins, pigments, and light-harvesting systems. As such, they are important to biology, biochemistry, and synthetic chemistry. In biochemistry, chromophores are essential for photosynthesis, vision, and biological signaling. In synthetic chemistry, they are used to develop materials for solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and optical sensors. Chromophores have a wide range of applications in medical diagnostics, such as spectroscopy, as well as for creating novel optical and optoelectronic devices.
