Catecholamines
Catecholamines are hormones, neurotransmitters and other molecules that contain a catechol and an amine group, which are derivatives of phenol. They are important in the body because they regulate processes such as the fight-or-flight response, glucose metabolism, and heart rate. Catecholamines are produced by the adrenal glands and the brain, which release them into the bloodstream in response to stress or activity. They have also been found to play a role in a wide range of disorders, including depression, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s disease. For this reason, catecholamines are often used as diagnostic and therapeutic targets for these conditions.
