Antiport Proteins
Antiport proteins are a type of cellular transporters that simultaneously transport two molecules in opposite directions across the cell's membrane. They play an essential role in maintaining a balanced cellular environment and are capable of exchanging ions, small proteins and metabolites. By mediating the transport of substances, antiport proteins are involved in many vital physiological functions including hormone signaling, immune responses, cell metabolism, and cell volume regulation. Antiport proteins are being studied as possible targets for drug development in cancer, neurological and inflammatory diseases. They are also being studied to better understand the mechanisms of how cells maintain homeostasis.
