Ameloblasts
Ameloblasts are specialized secretory cells which are responsible for the formation of the enamel layer of human teeth. The enamel layer is the outermost protective layer of teeth and is composed of the mineral hydroxyapatite, which is formed by the deposition of amelogenin, a protein secreted by ameloblasts. Ameloblasts also play an important role in the remineralization of enamel, which helps to repair and restore the integrity of tooth enamel. The presence and health of ameloblasts are vital for the normal functioning of the oral cavity, as an impaired ameloblast layer will lead to impaired mineralization and a decreased ability of the teeth to resist mechanical and chemical damage. Ameloblasts and the enamel layer of teeth are also important for speech production and allow for a wide range of mouth and jaw movements which are necessary for precise articulation of speech.
