Prolapse
Prolapse is the abnormal descent or displacement of pelvic organs from their normal anatomical position due to weakened muscles and ligaments of the pelvic floor. In women, the common organs that can prolapse are the bladder, uterus, rectum, and vagina. In men, the most common organ is the rectum. Prolapse is most common in postmenopausal women and those who have had a full-term pregnancy. Symptoms of prolapse can range from mild to severe and may include feeling a heaviness in the vaginal area, a bulge, discomfort, and difficulty with normal activities such as urinating, defecating, and sexual intercourse. Treatment of prolapse may involve physical therapy, pessaries, surgery, or a combination of these treatments. Early intervention is important to prevent more severe symptoms.
