Numerical Aperture

Numerical Aperture (NA) is a measure of the light gathering capability of an optical device, such as an objective lens, fiber optics, condenser, or microscope. It is widely used in the field of microscopy, optical lenses, and fiber optics communications to determine the efficiency, quality, and resolution of an image. Higher numerical apertures result in higher resolution, brighter images, and improved signal-to-noise ratio. The numerical aperture is a critical factor in determining the quality of an optical component’s performance and has a direct effect on the overall resolution of an imaging system. It is also a key component in the optical design of microscopes and other optical instruments.
