Triptans
Triptans are a class of medications used for the treatment of migraine headaches. They work by binding to serotonin receptors in the brain, leading to constriction of the blood vessels around the brain and blocking the release of inflammatory substances that can worsen migraine pain. Triptans are the most effective class of drugs for the treatment of migraine headaches and they are generally well tolerated when used as recommended. They are available as pills, injections, and nasal sprays, and allow many people to quickly and effectively reduce migraine headache pain, re-establish normal functioning, and potentially reduce the need for other medications.
