Huntington's Disease
Huntington’s Disease (HD) is an inherited, incurable, progressive and fatal disorder that affects the brain. It is caused by a mutation in a single gene, resulting in the destruction of nerve cells in the brain. Symptoms can begin at any age, but most commonly appear between 35 and 50 years old. Symptoms include a range of physical, emotional, and cognitive changes such as jerky and uncoordinated movements, emotional instability, changes in personality, and impaired judgment. Treatment is available to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. There is currently no cure for HD, but research is ongoing and progresses are being made to discover treatments that can slow the progression of the disease.
