Interstitial Cystitis

Interstitial Cystitis (IC) is a chronic, painful inflammation of the bladder, ranging in severity from mild to severe. Symptoms include a frequent and urgent need to urinate, pelvic pain, and pressure. While the cause of this condition is not definitively known, it is believed that it is caused by a defect in the bladder wall that allows toxic substances to enter the bladder and irritate it. IC is often misdiagnosed due to its wide-ranging symptoms, and therefore it is important to be evaluated by a knowledgeable healthcare provider if symptoms persist. Treatment of IC includes medications, dietary modifications, and bladder instillation therapies, as well as lifestyle changes. With proper management, IC can be managed to improve the quality of life of patients.
