Enterococcus
faecalis Enterococcus faecalis is a species of Gram-positive bacteria belonging to the genus Enterococcus. It is a commensal organism commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and other animals, and is a common cause of infection in hospitals, with the potential to cause serious infections such as urinary tract and bloodstream infections. Enterococcus faecalis is resistant to many antibiotics, including penicillins, and is increasingly identified as a cause of antimicrobial resistance. It is being studied for its ability to degrade complex organic compounds, enabling its use in bioremediation applications. In addition, its genome sequence has been used for comparative genomics to investigate the evolution of antibiotic resistance.
