Endometrium
The endometrium is the innermost layer of the uterus and is the tissue that lines and supports the uterine cavity. It is an essential part of the female reproductive system, playing an important role in the menstrual cycle and enabling a successful pregnancy. During a menstrual cycle, the endometrium builds up in thickness each month in preparation for pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, the endometrium is shed as menstrual flow. If a fertilized egg is implanted in the endometrium, the tissue will develop further to nourish and protect the growing fetus until birth. The endometrium also makes up part of the placenta, the organ that connects the fetus to the mother’s uterus and provides nutrients and oxygen during pregnancy. The endometrium is thus an integral part of the female reproductive system that plays an important part in fertility, menstrual cycle regulation, and successful pregnancy.
