Traumatic Injury Risk Factors
Traumatic injury is an injury that results from physical force, most commonly from a fall, motor vehicle accident, or sports-related activity. Risk factors for traumatic injury include age, gender, environment, and lifestyle. Older individuals, particularly those over the age of 65, are more likely to suffer traumatic injuries from falls due to weakened physical condition, poor balance, and other age-related factors. Females are more likely to suffer traumatic injuries related to car accidents and sports-related activities. The environment can present certain risks; for example, areas with a high concentration of hazardous materials may increase the likelihood of an accident-related traumatic injury. High-risk lifestyles, such as drug and alcohol use, risk-taking behavior, and lack of protective gear or safety precautions, also increase the risk of traumatic injury. Understanding and addressing these risk factors are key to reducing the incidence of traumatic injury.
