Spinal Cord Injury
Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a condition that results from damage to the nerves of the spinal cord. SCI often leads to partial or complete loss of sensation and movement below the level of the injury. The severity of the condition can vary greatly, from partial paralysis to complete paralysis. It is a serious medical condition that requires immediate medical attention. In addition to motor and sensory deficits, SCI can also cause issues with breathing, bladder and bowel control, digestion, and circulation. SCI can have a dramatic impact on a person’s quality of life. Treatment options include physical and occupational therapy, medications, and surgery. Research is ongoing to find new and better ways to manage SCI and improve quality of life.
