Injury
Severity Score The Injury Severity Score (ISS) is a system used to clinically measure the severity of trauma (injury) sustained by a patient in an accident. It is used for research and for describing the extent of injury in traumatic events. The score is based on the most severe injury sustained in three different body regions: head, torso, and extremities. Each of these regions is assigned an abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) score from 1 to 6, with a higher number representing a more severe injury. The AIS scores are then used to calculate the ISS score, which has a range of 1-75. The higher the score, the more severe the injury. The ISS score can be useful in determining the prognosis of the injured person, the type of medical intervention needed, the length of hospitalization, and the overall cost of treatment.
