Listeria

monocytogenes Listeria monocytogenes is a species of Gram-positive bacteria belonging to the genus Listeria. This bacterial species can be found in soil, water, animal feces, and processed foods. It is particularly notable due to its ability to cause foodborne illness in humans, known as listeriosis. Symptoms of listeriosis can include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, and nausea. Although listeriosis is rare, it can be serious or even fatal in certain persons, such as those with weakened immune systems, the elderly, and pregnant women. Thus, the proper handling and cooking of food is important to prevent foodborne illness. Listeria monocytogenes can also cause meningitis, sepsis, encephalitis, and uterus infections.
