Chiroptera
Chiroptera is an order of placental mammals, known commonly as bats. They are the only mammals capable of true, sustained flight. They are found in almost all habitats, with the exception of the polar regions, and are one of the most abundant and diverse groups of mammals, with more than 1300 species worldwide. They have diverse diets, typically consisting of insects, fruit, nectar and pollen, as well as larger species that feed on fish and small mammals. Bats play important roles in both natural and human-altered environments, as they are important pollinators, seed dispersers and insect predators. As they are a reservoir for many pathogens and parasites, they are also important in the study of emerging infectious diseases. Chiroptera are also of cultural significance, as they are featured in a variety of folklore and mythology.
