Pulmonary Arteries

The pulmonary arteries are the vessels that carry oxygen-poor blood away from the heart to the lungs. The pulmonary arteries play a vital role in the body’s cardiovascular system. They are responsible for transferring oxygen from the heart to the lungs, and carbon dioxide from the lungs to the heart. By maintaining the oxygen levels of blood circulating throughout the body, the pulmonary arteries ensure the organs, tissues and cells receive the oxygen they need to survive. In addition, they help regulate blood pressure, which can be important in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
