Gallbladder

The gallbladder is a small organ located by the liver in the upper right section of the abdomen. It stores bile, a fluid produced in the liver that helps the body break down fat. Occasionally, the gallbladder becomes inflamed, a condition known as cholecystitis, and sometimes stones form inside the gallbladder, a condition known as cholelithiasis. Gallbladder problems can be treated with medications, dietary changes or, in extreme cases, surgery to remove the gallbladder. Understanding the importance of the gallbladder is key to managing and treating gallbladder diseases and conditions.
