Vibrissae
Vibrissae are sensory organs, commonly referred to as “whiskers”, that many mammals use to detect their environment. These fine hairs, which are usually located around the mouth and above the eyes, are very sensitive and can even detect tiny changes in air currents to help animals capture their prey or avoid predators. Vibrissae are also used in navigation, helping the animal to feel its way in the dark. Vibrissae are important because they help animals respond quickly to their environment and navigate safely through their habitat. They can also act as a form of communication between animals.
