Respiration, Birds
Respiration is the process by which birds and other animals exchange gases between the environment and their cells to produce energy for life. It is a fundamental process for survival and is of great significance in the lives of birds. The oxygen that birds inhale and the carbon dioxide that they exhale are exchanged within the cells to enable their energy needs to be met. This process also helps them to regulate body temperature and rid their bodies of waste products. In addition, certain species of birds such as waterfowl and shorebirds use the process of respiration to perform aerial dives, which helps them to better navigate their environment. Respiration is also an important part of bird migration as it helps them to maintain energy levels during their long periods of flight.
