Petrels
Petrels are a group of seabird species within the order Procellariiformes. They are medium to large sized birds most commonly found in the open oceans around the world. Some species have adapted to life near coastal shores, nesting in burrows on rocky cliffs. Their wings are specially adapted for long line-of-sight soaring, enabling them to travel great distances in search of food. Petrels have a special significance in the folklore of many cultures. In the past, sailors have seen them as omens of good or bad luck, depending on the species or behavior. In modern times, Petrels are important indicators of the health of the open oceans, by providing information about the movements of ocean currents, as well as the abundance of local and migratory fish species. Petrels are also of interest to scientists due to their unique and highly varied vocalizations, which are being studied to better understand their ecology and behaviors.
