Feathers
Feathers are specialised structures found in modern birds and a few species of dinosaur. They allow birds to fly and provide insulation to keep them warm. Feathers also play a key role in the display of colours and patterns used by birds for communication and courtship. Many bird species use feathers for sensory, auditory and tactile functions. The shape and structure of feathers are incredibly diverse and their unique properties mean they have numerous uses in the human world. Feathers can be used as a filler in pillows and quilts, as insulation in bats, arrows and dart shafts, as an absorbent in oil spills, as floating materials for water sports and wind vanes, and for decoration or fashion accessories.
