Polynyas
Polynyas are large and persistent areas of open water surrounded by sea ice, generally found in the polar regions. They are of great scientific importance since they play a critical role in the global climate system, as they enable the exchange of heat and humidity between the ocean and atmosphere. They are also an important habitat for a range of marine species, including seals, whales and birds. They are also essential for the livelihoods of many Indigenous populations in the polar regions, who depend on the resources they provide.
