Paleooceanography

Palaeooceanography is the study of the history, composition and circulation of ocean waters throughout Earth's history. It examines the ocean's role in global climate, its influence on biological and geological evolution and it's connection to the global carbon cycle. Palaeooceanography is important for understanding how past oceanic and climatic events have shaped Earth’s history and ecosystems, and provide insight into the future. This research helps scientists to identify potential changes in ocean circulation and climate which may provide a better understanding of the impact of current human activities. Palaeooceanography can also be used to assess the resilience of marine ecosystems to climate change, and to inform marine resource management decisions.
