Bivalves

Bivalves are a group of molluscs, such as clams and oysters, that have two hinged shells. They use their muscular foot to move and burrow into sediment. Bivalves are important economically as they form a major source of food and they are used to make pearls. They are also essential to the aquatic ecosystem, playing an important role in filtering and aerating water, while their shells provide habitats for many other aquatic species. The shells are also often used as fossils to indicate ancient environments. Bivalves are considered to be important indicators of water quality and pollution, making them key components of environmental monitoring.
